The Struggle Continues
Jun 11, 2013

In January 2007, the employees of Alta Vista Regional hospital in Las Vegas NM decided to form a union and join District 1199NM for the purposes of representation and collective bargaining.
In June of 2007 the National Labor Relations Board held a union election at Alta Vista Regional Hospital, in which over three hundred employees were eligible to vote. More than two thirds of the employees voted yes. Management immediately filed charges to try and delay the certification by the state. Management continued to file bogus charges to ensure that the union would not be certified or begin the negotiations process.
In March of 2008, management’s charges were taken to the furthest extent, Washington DC. The NLRB ruled that District 1199NM would be certified and would therefore be the representatives of the employees of Alta Vista Regional Hospital. Community Health Systems, owners of Alta Vista, decided to file objections to the NLRB decision. These charges are now being heard, of which the hearing is pending, August 19, 2009.
Meantime the employees at Alta Vista Hospital have remained strong and unified in their struggle for an opportunity to begin collective bargaining. The community and groups such as the Center for Peace and Justice have embraced the workers struggle, and continue to give District 1199NM and the workers of Alta Vista, the strength to continue.
