Christus St. Vincent lay off update
Jan 09, 2015

Earlier today Delegates of District 1199 NM at St. Vincent’s and representatives of the Nurse Staffing Committee met with the HR Director of CHRISTUS as a follow up to a request made last week by Union Rep Dianne Harris for an explanation of rumored lay-offs.
It was announced to the Union’s representatives that 50 hospital positions would be affected by lay-offs but that some employees would be offered other positions in the hospital. Otherwise anyone laid-off would be given a six (6) weeks’ severance package.
Workers represented by 1199 NM were the least affected.
Of the 13 union represented positions impacted, nine will be repositioned elsewhere for work in the hospital. The four remaining union represented persons affected will receive the 6 weeks’ severance package.
We feel badly for those who are adversely impacted by this lay-off. This is not a good time for anyone to lose their job, whether they are a union member or manager or anyone in a department that chose not to organize as a member of the union.
The lay-offs have raised another very important issue for not only employees but for the community served by the hospital.
We understand that CSVRMC has stated it is losing money.
However CSVRMC has excluded the Direct Care Giver Members of the Nurse Staffing Committee in the decisions regarding reductions in staffing, which affects patient care.
The Nurse Staffing Committee is a Standing Committee (NSC) of the Hospital. The governing body of the hospital as provided by New Mexico code assigned duties to this committee. Among them are for the NSC to “make recommendations with respect to any suggested adjustments to nurse and/or ancillary staffing levels.”
CSVRMC has failed to even discuss the lay-offs with the Nurse Staffing Committee. Any future discussion involving reductions in staff should include the participation of the entire Nurse Staffing Committee.
The District 1199 NM St. Vincent’s Hospital delegates and representatives of the Nurse Staffing Committee attending the meeting this morning with the HR Director were: Delma DeLora – District VP; Diane Spencer – Nurse Staffing Committee; Chad Leet – Nurse Staffing Committee; Grace Valdez – VP, Techs; Shirley Cruse – Delegate, Techs; Cathy Geist – Delegate, Service and Maintenance; Gerald Rivera – Delegate, Service and Maintenance; Dianne Harris, Union Representative.
In the end we would also like to remind folks that it certainly is beneficial to have the protection of a union contract.
